Huskies men’s basketball looks to build off promising finish

HOUGHTON — Following a promising beginning to the 2022-23 season with two victories in their first three matches, the Michigan Tech Huskies men's basketball team encountered a substantial struggle throughout much of the season due to significant challenges. They managed to secure merely six more wins prior to the commencement of the GLIAC playoffs.

In the playoff stage, the Huskies achieved a remarkable upset against the top-seeded Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers, prevailing with a score of 73-68. Subsequently, in the semifinals, the Huskies pulled off another surprise by defeating the fifth-seeded Grand Valley State Lakers with a score of 73-69. Nevertheless, their Cinderella run came to a close in the championship game, concluding with a score of 79-66. The season concluded with a record of 10-20.

Throughout the majority of the previous season, the Huskies began games with three freshmen and two sophomores, which led to a challenging season marked by a variety of on and off-court factors.

Head coach Josh Buettner commented, "We faced significant challenges due to our youthfulness. Michigan Tech has a distinctive approach; we do not opt for quick fixes through the transfer portal when we experience substantial departures all at once. Even among the returning players, the team's composition was vastly different from the prior year, necessitating the experienced players to adapt to entirely new roles. Consequently, it was a fresh start for everyone. Although our fundamental offensive principles remained consistent, the execution of our offensive strategy was essentially novel for all."

The Huskies' initial two victories of the season were part of a three-game home series to commence the season. Subsequently, they embarked on a demanding stretch of six consecutive away games, with eight of their next ten games also being played on the road. Within this series of six games, the team encountered a rigorous schedule, playing four games in a span of five days, leaving minimal time for practice, especially with a roster predominantly consisting of underclassmen.
