Whether to puddle or not: choosing the perfect curtain length

The great majority of the living room curtains we now install are floor-length. This is not just for functional purposes but also for aesthetics, as longer curtains tend to make rooms appear taller and more spacious.

Should my curtains touch the ground? This is one of the most common queries our consultants receive; therefore, we've provided solutions in this blog article.

Curtains should be floor-length for optimal light control and thermal performance, even on short windows. Gone are the days when curtains were installed just below the windowsill!

The great majority of the living room curtains we now install are floor-length. This is not just for functional purposes but also for aesthetics, as longer curtains tend to make rooms appear taller and more spacious.

The sole exception to this is when there is something beneath the window that prevents floor-length curtains, such as a heater.

Curtains are typically installed so that they skim the floor or hover slightly above it. However, there are a few different options for the finished length of your curtains, depending on your own tastes, the room the curtains will be put in, and the effect you want to achieve:

Floating

This is when curtains are made to hang approximately 5 mm off the floor.

This is a reasonable length that keeps the hems of your curtains from accumulating dust and allows for easy opening and closing.

Curtains float 5 mm above a wood floor.

Curtains are draped near the floor for a comfortable yet fitted look.

This type is more forgiving if you have uneven floors (making it an excellent choice for restorations!). This is especially true if you're using a natural fiber fabric, such as linen, which expands and contracts with the seasons.

Sheer curtains skim over the carpet.

Puddling

The drapes are designed slightly longer so that the ends "puddle" on the floor, creating a luxurious and romantic atmosphere.

Be advised that this is a more high-maintenance design that necessitates more attention while cleaning because the hems might collect dust and debris from the floor.

Puddle-length curtains pool on the floor

So here is a summary of the most common final curtain lengths. During an in-home consultation, our consultants will offer expert advice on the best option for your windows and doors.
